The headline on the front page of yesterday's Kompas daily was disturbing to say the least: Guru Mogok, Puluhan Ribu Siswa Terlantar (Teachers on Strike, Thousands of Students Abandoned). It is rare but increasingly common in Indonesia that teachers, who are supposed to belong to the noblest profession, decide not to turn up for work.
